I’m sure you’ve heard that you can’t make money from book sales, so why write a book? You matter. Your work matters. And, when you hold that book in your hands, imagine how great it will feel.
If it’s nonfiction you are writing, there are countless reasons to write a book.
Here are 7 reasons to write a nonfiction book for yourself and your career.
Reason #1: Do It For The Learning
No matter how much of an expert you are in your field, when you write your book, you’ll learn a lot – even about things you know. You will become more of an expert than you already are. It’ll help you clarify what you already know simply by putting your story down on paper in a way that everyone can understand. It is a powerful process that will make you better at what you do.
If you are not already an expert, and you are willing to learn new things, then writing a book will help you become that expert through planning, research, and writing.
You’ll be an expert in your field in no time. Isn’t that reason enough to write your book?
Reason # 2-Do It For The Challenge
Why do people climb mountains, run marathons, or lift heavy weights? It’s all for the challenge. It is about pushing yourself past barriers.
Writing your nonfiction book is no different. If nothing else, challenge yourself to do what feels impossible. Challenging ourselves is part of our growth process as humans. Writing a book is one challenge you can take on and reap all the benefits of pushing yourself to new limits.
Imagine the confidence you will build after doing the seemingly impossible?
Reason #3-Do It To Expand Your Horizons
Writing a book expands your horizons no matter where you are in your career. Writing is a skill, not a talent; and you can master it if you’re willing to practice. Writing a book will give you the practice you need. And, if you commit to writing the best book possible, you’ll plan, write and rewrite. Through that process, you’ll have the potential to become an excellent writer.
You’ll expand your horizons no matter your goal. Because, if you can write a book, imagine what else you can do?
Reason # 4: Do It To Check Off A Bucket List
Is writing a book something you’ve always dreamed of doing? If you’re passionate about the subject… if it matters to you, and you have a message to spread that you know will make a difference, go for it. Write a book!
If you are the kind of person who wants to leave a legacy, writing your nonfiction book will do just that.
Reason #5: Do it to Increase Your Authority
A common reason to write a book is to set you apart from your competition. And, I don’t mean because you’ll have a book and they won’t. Having a book shows your audience who you are and why you’re different from every other person in your field. Your work ethic and values will shine through. Your book will let people know what it’s like to work with you and why they should choose you. That alone will do wonders for your career.
Reason # 6: Do It For The Marketing
Books are great marketing tools for your current business, building revenue streams when planned and executed properly. For example, Amazon is a search engine. When you put your book in this massive search engine, a vast audience has the potential to find you.
Your book can also help position you as a thought leader or expert, which can increase your clientele and lead to other revenue streams. All from writing your nonfiction book.
Reason # 7: Do It To Expand Your Revenue Streams
Writing a book can serve as a launchpad for additional revenue streams. It has the potential to land you new writing opportunities and speaking gigs. Determine your reason for writing a book and then commit to taking action.
I’m going to leave you with a quote from Seth Godin:
“Writing a book is a tremendous experience. It pays off intellectually. It clarifies your thinking. It builds credibility. It is a living engine of marketing and idea spreading, working every day to deliver your message with authority. You should write a book.“ – Seth Godin
